PLATE CIRCLE LTD · Software Studio
Software built with the care of an architect,
and the discipline of an engineer.
We design, build, and quietly maintain the systems businesses rely on every day — bespoke applications, cloud architecture, integrations, and the invisible work that keeps everything running.
§ 01 — Overview
A studio, not a factory.
Plate Circle Ltd is an independent software engineering practice. We work with founders, product teams, and operations leaders who need software that is genuinely considered — from the shape of the database up to the details a person feels in the interface.
Every engagement begins with the same question: what does this software actually need to do, for whom, and for how long. Our answers stay small enough to build well and large enough to matter.
§ 02 — Capabilities
Core technical capabilities.
08 domains
- 01
Application engineering
Web, backend, and API systems designed for clarity and change.
- 02
Cloud & infrastructure
Right-sized architecture on modern cloud platforms.
- 03
Data & integrations
Reliable pipelines between the tools you already use.
- 04
Security engineering
Practical hardening woven into how software is built.
- 05
Interface design
Interfaces that respect users' time and attention.
- 06
Modernisation
Careful renewal of software that has outgrown its foundations.
- 07
Quality assurance
Testing as a design activity, not a final step.
- 08
Long-term support
Steady maintenance for systems that must stay dependable.
§ 03 — Practice
Software work, taken seriously.
A small number of services, delivered with real depth. Each is available as a standalone engagement or as part of a broader product effort.

§ 04 — Custom software
Applications tailored to how your business actually works.
We build custom software when a general-purpose tool cannot express the specifics of an operation — when the workflow has its own vocabulary, its own edge cases, its own compliance considerations. Our engagements typically begin with a short discovery period, followed by iterative delivery in short cycles that keep decisions reversible and progress visible.
- Operational systems for internal teams
- Client-facing platforms
- Automation of high-volume manual work

§ 05 — Web applications
Interfaces that feel considered from the first click.
Modern web applications live in the tension between speed and depth. We build interfaces that load quickly, respond immediately, and reveal complexity gradually. Under the surface, the same standards apply: typed contracts between components, thoughtful state management, and behaviour verified with tests.
- Design system foundations
- Accessible components as default
- Progressive enhancement over heavy runtimes

§ 06 — Cloud & infrastructure
Infrastructure sized to the problem.
Cloud choices should follow from the shape of a workload, not the other way around. We design environments that stay understandable at 3am — clear boundaries, sensible defaults, reproducible from code, and honest about where the cost actually goes.

§ 07 — Data & integration
Systems that speak to each other.
Most modern software problems are integration problems. We connect the tools you already rely on, move data reliably between them, and produce a single truthful view for the people making decisions.
- 01Event-driven pipelines
- 02Batch ETL and reconciliation
- 03Third-party API adapters
- 04Warehouse and analytics modelling

§ 08 — Security & reliability
Security is a way of building, not a checklist.
We treat security as a design property that has to be present from the earliest lines of code and reaffirmed every time the system changes. That means practical measures — clear identity boundaries, least-privilege defaults, dependency hygiene, sensible logging, and a plain-English incident response plan.
§ 09 — Process
How a project moves from idea to durable software.
01
Listen
Understand what the software must do, and for whom.
02
Frame
Agree on a shape, a scope, and the trade-offs that come with each.
03
Build
Ship small, reviewed pieces on a steady cadence.
04
Verify
Test where it matters, in the environment it will actually run.
05
Sustain
Stay close after launch and keep the software fit for use.
§ 10 — Approach
We choose the least novel technology that will serve the problem well. Boring on the outside means reliable on the inside, which is the only kind of reliability that lasts.
SelectionTechnologies with a track record, active communities, and honest documentation.
CompositionSmall, well-defined services rather than sprawling monoliths or exotic distributed systems.
RestraintFewer moving parts, fewer surprises, fewer things to teach a future maintainer.
§ 11 — Industries
Contexts we can support.
Our practice is domain-agnostic; what matters is the shape of the problem. We are most useful where software is at the core of the operation.
- Professional services
- Hospitality technology
- Logistics & operations
- Retail & e-commerce
- Health & wellness platforms
- Media & publishing
- Financial back-office
- Education technology
- Non-profit operations
§ 12 · Common practice
Testing at the end.
Software is written, then handed to a separate stage for verification. Defects surface late, feedback cycles are long, and confidence has to be reconstructed each release.
§ 12 · Our practice
Testing as a design activity.
Behaviour is described in tests before it is built, and those tests continue to run on every change. The result is software whose promises are checked automatically, so humans can spend their attention on questions machines cannot answer.
§ 13 — Support
The work does not end at launch.
Software behaves like any other operating asset: it depreciates if it is ignored and improves if it is cared for. We stay engaged after delivery — patching, refactoring, monitoring, and gently evolving systems as the business around them changes.

§ 14 — In summary
Plate Circle Ltd is a small team taking software seriously — on behalf of clients who need to do the same.
§ 15 — Enquiries
Get in touch.
Written correspondence remains the fastest route to a considered reply. Please include a short description of the work you are considering.
